The short answer

No company owns GB WhatsApp, so no “official” version exists. The original GB WhatsApp today simply means an unchanged copy of the developer’s own build. Right now, that build is version 27.06 from Abu Saleh and the FMMods group. Any file that differs from its details is a copy someone changed.

This page is part of our complete GB WhatsApp guide. Here, we answer the questions people ask most when they search for the original app: which one is real, who made it, and how to tell a genuine file from a fake.

This matters more than it sounds. Security company ESET found that fake GB WhatsApp copies caused a large share of the Android spyware it detected in 2022. So, a few quick checks can protect your chats, your photos, and your number.

What Does “Original GB WhatsApp” Really Mean?

With most apps, “original” means the version the company publishes. GB WhatsApp has no company behind it. Instead, independent developers build it and share it as an APK file. So, “original” can only mean one thing: a file that nobody changed after the developer released it.

Every GB WhatsApp file online falls into one of four groups.

File type

What it is

Safe to use?

Developer build

The file exactly as the developer released it.

This is the original. Still check it.

Mirror copy

The same file, uploaded to another site without changes.

Fine, if every detail matches.

Repack

A changed copy, often with extra ads or code added.

No. You cannot see what changed.

Fake

A file that only uses the GB WhatsApp name.

No. These often carry spyware.

Mirror copies and repacks look identical on a download page. Therefore, the checks in the next sections matter more than the site that hosts the file.

Who Made GB WhatsApp?

Nobody can prove who built the very first GB WhatsApp. The app appeared in the mid 2010s, and sources disagree on its creator. You will see names like Atnfas Hoak, Rafalense, HeyMods, and AlexMods, but no reliable record confirms any one of them as the founder.

What we can confirm is who builds it now. Over the years, several developers kept their own GB WhatsApp lines.

Developer

What they publish

Status in October 2026

Abu Saleh with FMMods

GB WhatsApp 2x.xx line

Active. Latest build 27.06.

AlexMods

GB WhatsApp Pro 18.xx line

Quiet since 18.70 in August 2025.

HeyMods

Older GB WhatsApp builds

Inactive. Meta sued HeyMods in 2022.

Meta’s lawsuit is worth knowing about. In 2022, Meta took HeyMods and other developers to court over fake WhatsApp apps that compromised more than one million accounts, according to Bitdefender’s report. Those apps asked people to log in, stole their account keys, and then sent spam from their numbers. Some of them even reached Google Play and APKPure for a while.

What does “GB” stand for?

No developer has ever confirmed what GB means. Some say it came from an early modding group’s name, while others link it to “great” or “gigabyte”. In practice, the letters simply mark this one family of WhatsApp mods.

Is There an Official GB WhatsApp Website?

No. Hundreds of sites call themselves “official GB WhatsApp”, but none of them owns the app. Developers share their builds through their own channels, and every other site hosts copies.

So, judge a download site by what it shows you, not by what it calls itself. A trustworthy site does these things.

  • Names the developer and the exact version number
  • Lists the official WhatsApp base version the build uses
  • Shows the file size and package name
  • Admits the ban risk instead of promising “100% anti ban”
  • Lets you download without surveys, logins, or extra apps

On the other hand, walk away from any site that pushes a “special” installer, asks for your phone number, or offers versions that no developer released, like 18.85 or 31.15.

How to Check If Your GB WhatsApp Is Original

You do not need special skills to check a file. Start with the easy checks, and use the advanced one if you want extra certainty.

Check 1: the package name and version

Open Settings on your phone, tap Apps, and select GB WhatsApp. The version shows near the bottom of the App info screen. Inside the app, GB Settings also shows the version. The original build reads 27.06 and installs as com.gbwhatsapp.

Check 2: the file size

Before you install, look at the size of the downloaded file. The original 27.06 file weighs about 133 MB. A 40 MB or 200 MB file is not the same app.

Check 3: a scan before you open it

Let Google Play Protect scan the file when Android asks. For a second opinion, upload the APK to VirusTotal, which checks it with dozens of antivirus engines. A few generic warnings are normal for mods, but a named trojan or spyware result means you should delete the file.

Check 4: the permissions it asks for

A real GB WhatsApp asks for the same things as WhatsApp: contacts, camera, microphone, storage, and notifications. However, WhatsApp never needs Accessibility access or device admin rights. If your copy asks for either, uninstall it right away.

Check 5: the signing certificate (advanced)

Every APK carries the developer’s digital signature. Android uses it as a built in check: it only installs an update over your app when both files share the same signature. So, if a new build installs cleanly over a copy you already trust, both come from the same signer. That is also why you should update GB WhatsApp only with a file from the same developer.

On a computer, advanced users can also read the signature with Google’s apksigner tool, using the command apksigner verify with the print certs option. Then compare the certificate fingerprint across files from the same developer.

Good to know

A matching signature proves who signed a file, not that the file is harmless. So, always combine the signature check with a scan.

Signs of a Fake GB WhatsApp

Fake copies are not a rare problem. In its threat report for mid 2022, ESET said that GB WhatsApp copies were behind a large share of the Android spyware it detected, and it described versions on download sites as “riddled with malware”. Kaspersky found a similar trojan inside a copy of FM WhatsApp, a sister mod.

Watch for these warning signs.

  • The site makes you install a “downloader” app first.
  • The file comes as a ZIP, an EXE, or anything other than an APK.
  • The app asks for Accessibility, device admin, or SMS reading rights.
  • The version number does not exist, such as 18.85 or 31.15.
  • The app shows ads outside of itself, on your lock screen or home screen.
  • Your phone suddenly drains battery or data after the install.

Important

If you notice two or more of these signs, treat the app as a fake. Follow the steps in the “installed a fake” section below.

How to Install the Original GB WhatsApp Safely

  1. Back up your chats. In your current WhatsApp, open Settings, then Chats, then Chat backup, and tap Back up.
  2. Download the original file. Use the button on this page and wait for the full file, about 133 MB.
  3. Check the size and scan it. Confirm the size, and let Play Protect scan it.
  4. Install it. Allow unknown apps for your browser or file manager, then tap Install.
  5. Check the permissions. Grant only contacts, camera, microphone, storage, and notifications.
  6. Verify your number and restore. Enter the code WhatsApp sends you, and restore your backup.

For screenshots and more detail, read the install section of our main guide.

What to Do If You Installed a Fake GB WhatsApp

Act quickly, but stay calm. These steps close the most common doors a fake app opens.

  1. Uninstall the app. If Android will not let you, open Settings, then Security, then Device admin apps, and remove its rights first.
  2. Check linked devices. In official WhatsApp, open Settings, then Linked devices, and log out of any device you do not recognize. Our GB WhatsApp Web guide explains how linked devices work.
  3. Turn on two step verification. In official WhatsApp, open Settings, then Account, then Two step verification, and set a PIN.
  4. Scan your phone. Run Google Play Protect from the Play Store menu.
  5. Change important passwords. Start with your email and banking apps, especially if you typed them while the fake app was installed.

Remember

A fake app can read what it saw while installed. So, warn your contacts if strange messages went out from your number.

Original GB WhatsApp Pros and Cons

Why the original matters

  • You get the features the developer built, nothing more
  • You avoid repacks that hide spyware or extra ads
  • Updates install cleanly over your current app
  • You can compare every detail with the release

What the original cannot fix

  • WhatsApp can still ban your number
  • No app store reviews the file
  • The developer can stop updating at any time
  • “Original” never means “official”

Our Verdict

There is no official GB WhatsApp, but there is an original one: the unchanged build from its developer. Today, that means GB WhatsApp 27.06 from Abu Saleh, or Pro 18.70 if you follow the AlexMods line.

So, check the package name, version, size, and permissions before you trust any file. Those four checks take less than a minute, and they protect you from the fakes that ESET and Kaspersky keep finding. Even with the original file, use a secondary number, because WhatsApp can still ban accounts that use mods.

Original GB WhatsApp FAQs

These answers cover the questions people search most about the real GB WhatsApp.

The original GB WhatsApp is the unchanged build from its current developer. Right now, that is version 27.06 from Abu Saleh and the FMMods group, with the package name com.gbwhatsapp.

No. No company owns GB WhatsApp, so no version is official. Sites that use the word “official” simply host copies of the file.

Nobody owns it. Independent developers build it, and the current main line comes from Abu Saleh with the FMMods group. Meta owns WhatsApp itself, not GB WhatsApp.

Nobody can prove who built the first version. Sources name several people, such as Atnfas Hoak, Rafalense, HeyMods, and AlexMods, but no reliable record confirms one founder.

There is none. Developers share builds through their own channels, and every other site hosts copies. Judge a site by the details it shows, not by its name.

Check four things: the package name reads com.gbwhatsapp, the version is 27.06, the file is about 133 MB, and the app never asks for Accessibility or device admin rights.

Download it from this page, then confirm the size and let Play Protect scan the file before you install it. The download needs no survey, login, or extra app.

It is far safer than a fake, but it still carries risk. No app store reviews it, and WhatsApp can ban numbers that use unofficial apps.

GB WhatsApp Pro is a separate original line from the developer AlexMods. Its latest real build is 18.70 from August 2025.

No. AndroidWaves is a download site, not a developer. Its files can match the original, but you should check every detail first.

Yes. ESET found GB WhatsApp copies behind a large share of Android spyware detections in 2022. Fake copies can read messages, record audio, or show unwanted ads.

Uninstall it, log out of unknown linked devices in official WhatsApp, turn on two step verification, scan your phone with Play Protect, and change important passwords.

A real GB WhatsApp never needs it. Accessibility access lets an app read your screen, so deny it and uninstall that copy.

No developer has confirmed it. Today, the letters simply name this family of WhatsApp mods.

No. Developers never publish GB WhatsApp on Google Play. In 2022, fake WhatsApp mods even slipped onto Google Play and APKPure for a few months, so treat any store listing with suspicion.
