Which Old Version Should You Pick?

  • Your GB WhatsApp crashes after an update? Try the previous build, 26.97.
  • You use GB WhatsApp Pro? Stay on 18.70, the last Pro build.
  • Your phone runs Android 5? No old version fixes that, because WhatsApp ended Android 5 support on 8 September 2026.
  • You hope an old build avoids a ban? It will not, because bans follow your number, not the app version.
  • Everyone else should simply use the latest 27.06.

The short answer

GB WhatsApp old versions are earlier builds of the mod from developers like AlexMods, HeyMods, and Abu Saleh. Most builds older than 2025 now fail at login, because their copy of WhatsApp has grown too old. So, use an old version only for a clear reason, such as a crash in the newest build.

This page is part of our complete GB WhatsApp guide. Here, we sort every GB WhatsApp version into its build line and show what we could verify for each one.

Most old version lists online invent release dates or list versions that never existed. We took a different path. We only give a date or a base version when a developer post confirms it, and we say so plainly when we could not.

These are the builds we could confirm through developer release posts. For each one, the table shows the build line, the official WhatsApp version it copies, and whether it still makes sense to use.

We list a detail only when a developer post confirms it. Last checked 20 October 2026.

GB WhatsApp Pro 18.60

Before you download an old version

  • Check the base, not the year. The WhatsApp version a build copies decides whether it still logs in. A file name with a year in it tells you nothing.
  • Back up first. Going back to an older build means you must uninstall the newer one, and that wipes the app folder.
  • Expect fewer fixes. Old builds miss security and stability fixes that later builds added.

Field note

Our separate guide covers the Pro line in depth. See GB WhatsApp Pro 18.70 for its full release notes and update steps.

Every GB WhatsApp Version Family at a Glance

GB WhatsApp never had one owner. Instead, several modders kept their own build lines, and each line used its own numbers. That is why a version 18 can be older than a version 26, and why a “higher” number does not always mean “newer”.

Eras are approximate. Only a few old releases come with a dated developer post.

How we dated these

We dated the 17.00 build from its official WhatsApp base, 2.22.10.73, which dates from 2022. We dated the 18.xx builds from the AlexMods release channel, and the 2x.xx builds from the current developer listing. For older families, no reliable dated record survives, so we give a rough era only.

Some old version numbers still get thousands of searches every month. Here is what each one really is, and whether it is worth your time.

GB WhatsApp 18.80 and 18.85

These are the most searched old versions, yet we found no developer post for either of them. The AlexMods channel stops at 18.70. So, files labeled 18.80 or 18.85 are usually renamed older builds or repacks of another mod. Use GB WhatsApp Pro 18.70 or the current 27.06 instead.

GB WhatsApp 17.60, 17.80, and 17.55

These come from the 17 series that circulated widely between 2022 and 2024. They run on old WhatsApp bases, so most of them now show “You need the official WhatsApp to log in”. Many sites call 17.55 the “AndroidWaves” version, but AndroidWaves is a download site, not a developer.

GB WhatsApp 17.36, 17.30, and 17.52

These are earlier 17 series builds. They still turn up in search because many phones kept them for years. However, they fail at login on most accounts today, so update to a current build instead.

GB WhatsApp 17.00

Version 17.00 came out in 2022 on the official WhatsApp 2.22.10.73 base, according to the release post that shared it. That base is now more than four years old, so 17.00 no longer works for most people.

GB WhatsApp 10.20 and 12.50

These builds belong to an older numbering system from the early 2020s. Many sites still list 10.20 as the “latest” version, which is simply wrong. Neither build logs in reliably today.

GB WhatsApp 6.50, 6.70, and 6.85

These are classic builds from the late 2010s, and many people still remember them. Sadly, they no longer work. Very old APKs that target Android versions before 6.0 also cannot install on Android 14 or newer at all.

GB WhatsApp 8.25 and 8.40

These builds come from the middle generation of GB WhatsApp. Like the 6.xx builds, they fail at login today and miss years of security fixes.

GB WhatsApp 31.15 and 30.37

Some sites advertise these numbers as “new” versions. We found no developer release for either of them. The current Abu Saleh build is 27.06, so a 31.15 or 30.37 file is most likely a relabeled copy. Avoid it.

Do Old GB WhatsApp Versions Still Work?

Usually not, and two separate limits explain why.

Limit 1: the WhatsApp base grows too old

Every GB build copies one version of official WhatsApp. WhatsApp regularly stops accepting old versions of its app. When that happens to the version a mod copies, the mod shows “You need the official WhatsApp to log in” or a similar message. No setting fixes this. Only a build with a newer base does.

Limit 2: WhatsApp drops old Android versions

Since 8 September 2026, WhatsApp supports only Android 6 and newer, according to its help page on supported systems and reporting by Notebookcheck. A GB build may still install on Android 5.1, but WhatsApp no longer supports those phones. So, an old version cannot rescue an old phone.

Quick test

Not sure whether your old build still works? Make a backup, then open it. If it shows a login or update message before you reach your chats, the base has expired and you need a newer build. Our GB WhatsApp update guide shows how to move to 27.06 without losing chats.

Why People Want an Older Version (and What Works Better)

People look for old GB WhatsApp builds for a handful of reasons. Here is each one, with the fix that usually works better.

Reason

What usually works better

The newest build crashes or freezes

Try the previous build, 26.97. If that also fails, clear the app cache and reinstall the latest build.

A favorite feature disappeared

Check GB Settings first, because features often move to a new menu. Old builds miss too many fixes to be worth it.

The phone is slow or low on storage

Free some space and use the current build. A smaller old build will not log in anyway.

An old build “avoids bans”

It does not. WhatsApp bans numbers, not app versions, and old bases actually draw more attention.

You need an old backup format

Restore the backup in the build that made it, then update in place to keep your chats.

For low storage phones, keep an eye on our upcoming guide to small GB WhatsApp builds.

How to Install an Old Version of GB WhatsApp

Android does not let you install an older version on top of a newer one. If you try, you get “App not installed”. So, going back always means a clean install. Follow these steps to keep your chats.

  1. Back up your chats. Open Settings, then Chats, then Chat backup, and tap Back up.
  2. Copy the backup folder. Move the GB WhatsApp folder from your phone storage to your computer or cloud storage.
  3. Uninstall the current build. Long press the app icon, tap App info, and then tap Uninstall.
  4. Install the old version. Download the APK, allow unknown apps for your browser or file manager, and tap Install.
  5. Put the backup back. Copy your backup folder into the same place on your phone storage.
  6. Verify and restore. Open the app, enter your number and code, and tap Restore when it finds your backup.

Watch out for this

A backup made by a newer build may not restore in an older one. If restore fails, go back to the newer build, restore there, and stay on it.

Going back to official WhatsApp instead? Our backup and restore guide shows every step.

GB WhatsApp 2023, 2022, and Other Year Versions

Many people search for a version by year, such as “GB WhatsApp 2023”. However, a year in a file name means very little. What matters is the WhatsApp base inside the file. Here is what we can say for each period.

Year

What was current

Our note

2026

Abu Saleh builds 26.97 and 27.06

Current line, works today

2025

AlexMods Pro builds 18.40 to 18.70

18.70 still works for some users

2023 and 2024

17 series builds such as 17.36 to 17.85

Mostly fail at login now

2022

17.00 on WhatsApp 2.22.10.73

Too old for most accounts

2021 and earlier

6.xx, 8.xx, and 10.xx builds

No longer work

So, if a site offers you a “2023 version”, ask yourself why you want it. In almost every case, the current build serves you better.

Is It Safe to Use an Old GB WhatsApp Version?

Old builds carry every risk of a current build, plus a few extra ones.

  • Missing security fixes. An old base lacks years of fixes that WhatsApp added to its own app.
  • Tampered reuploads. Archive sites often host files that someone repacked after the release. Security researchers have already found spyware inside modified WhatsApp copies, as The Hacker News reported.
  • Ban risk. WhatsApp can ban any number that uses an unofficial app, as its help center explains. An old build gives you no protection here.

Therefore, scan every old APK with Google Play Protect, use a secondary number, and move back to a current build as soon as you can. Our GB WhatsApp safety guide covers the full picture.

Old Version Problems and Fixes

Problem

Likely cause

Fix

“App not installed”

A newer build sits on your phone, and Android blocks downgrades.

Back up, uninstall the newer build, and then install the old one.

The install fails on Android 14 or newer

The APK targets an Android version older than 6.0.

Use a current build. Android 14 blocks these very old apps.

“You need the official WhatsApp to log in”

The WhatsApp base inside the build has expired.

Install the latest build, or return to official WhatsApp.

“This version is out of date”

The build is too old for WhatsApp servers.

Update to 27.06. No setting removes this message.

Chats do not restore

The backup came from a newer build.

Restore in the newer build and stay on it.

The app keeps crashing

The old build does not support your Android version.

Move to a build made for current Android versions.

Still stuck? Our GB WhatsApp fixes section covers more errors in detail.

Old Versions Pros and Cons

When an old version helps

  • The newest build crashes on your phone
  • You use the Pro line and want its last build
  • You need to restore an old backup in its own build

When it hurts

  • Most builds older than 2025 fail at login
  • Old bases miss years of security fixes
  • Archive files are often tampered reuploads
  • Old builds do not prevent bans

Our Verdict

Old GB WhatsApp versions have one real use: a fallback when the newest build misbehaves. For that job, the previous build, 26.97, works well, and Pro users can stay on 18.70.

Beyond that, old builds mostly cause trouble. They fail at login, miss security fixes, and give you no protection from bans. So, treat this archive as a backup plan and keep your main install on the latest build.

GB WhatsApp Old Versions FAQs

These answers cover the questions people search most about older GB WhatsApp builds.

You can download the builds we verified, such as 26.97, 18.70, and 18.60, from the download section on this page. We only list builds we could confirm through developer release posts.

For most people, the previous build, 26.97, makes the best fallback. If you use the Pro line, 18.70 is the best choice because it is the last Pro build.

We found no developer post for 18.80 or 18.85. The AlexMods channel stops at 18.70, so those files are usually renamed or repacked builds.

No, not for most accounts. Version 10.20 comes from an older numbering system, and its WhatsApp base has long expired.

No. Version 6.50 dates from the late 2010s, so it fails at login today and may not even install on Android 14 or newer.

No. Android blocks downgrades and shows “App not installed”. You must back up, uninstall the newer build, and then install the old one.

You lose them only if you skip the backup. Back up your chats and copy the backup folder before you uninstall, and then restore it after the install.

The official WhatsApp version inside your build has expired. Only a build with a newer base fixes this, so update to the latest version.

No. WhatsApp bans phone numbers, not app versions. Old builds may even draw more attention because they copy outdated WhatsApp code.

None reliably. WhatsApp ended support for Android 5 on 8 September 2026, so any WhatsApp build, official or modded, will struggle on those phones.

Builds from the 17 series, such as 17.36 to 17.85, circulated most widely in 2023 and 2024. Most of them fail at login today.

We found no developer release for 31.15 or 30.37. The current Abu Saleh build is 27.06, so treat those files as relabeled copies.

Be careful. Third party stores host uploaded copies, not developer releases. Compare the size and package name with the details on this page and scan the file first.

Open the three dot menu, tap GB Settings, and look for the Updates or About section. The version number appears there.

Yes, in almost every case. The latest build logs in more reliably and includes fixes the old builds lack. Back up first, then install it over your current build.
