GB WhatsApp for Chromebook: 3 Ways to Use It on ChromeOS

A Chromebook runs Android apps, so GB WhatsApp can work on it. However, the Play Store does not list the APK, so you need the right route. This guide gives you three, from a two minute link to a full install.

ChromeOS  ›  Android apps

A   WhatsApp Web, linked to your phone

B   Install the APK with ADB and Linux

C   Install the APK in developer mode

Which way should you go?

Route A

Link WhatsApp Web

Best for most people. GB WhatsApp stays on your phone and your chats show on the Chromebook.

Easy  ·  2 minutes

Route B

ADB with Linux

Runs GB WhatsApp itself on the Chromebook. Needs Linux and one restart, but no data wipe.

Medium  ·  20 minutes

Route C

Developer mode

Runs GB WhatsApp itself too. Wipes the Chromebook and turns off key security checks.

Advanced  ·  30 minutes

The short answer

Yes, you can use GB WhatsApp on most Chromebooks. The easiest way is to link WhatsApp Web to GB WhatsApp on your phone. To run the app itself, install the APK through the Linux ADB option, or switch on developer mode. School and work Chromebooks block both installs.

This page is part of our complete GB WhatsApp guide. We checked each ChromeOS step against Google’s own developer documentation.

The facts

Can You Install GB WhatsApp on a Chromebook?

Yes, on most models. Most Chromebooks from recent years run Android apps from Google Play. GB WhatsApp is an Android app, so the same system can run it.

The catch is the source. Google Play does not list GB WhatsApp, and ChromeOS does not open APK files from the Files app by default. So, you either link the app from your phone, or you open a developer door first.

Quick check

Open Settings and search for “Google Play Store”. If you see the option, your Chromebook runs Android apps.

Before you start

Check Your Chromebook First

  • Google Play works. Your Chromebook shows Google Play Store in Settings, and you can open it.
  • Nobody manages it. A school or work Chromebook shows a building icon or “managed” note. Managed devices cannot turn on ADB or developer mode.
  • Linux is available. You need it for Route B. Look under Settings › About ChromeOS › Developers.
  • A spare number is ready. Routes B and C make the Chromebook your main WhatsApp device for that number.
  • Your files are backed up. Route C wipes everything stored on the Chromebook.

Route A: Use GB WhatsApp on a Chromebook with WhatsApp Web

This route keeps GB WhatsApp on your Android phone. The Chromebook simply shows your chats in Chrome.

  1. On the Chromebook, open web.whatsapp.com in Chrome.
  2. On your phone, open GB WhatsApp and tap the three dot menu.
  3. Tap Linked devices, then Link a device.
  4. Scan the QR code on the Chromebook screen. Your chats load in a few seconds.
  5. Optional: click the install icon in the Chrome address bar. WhatsApp Web then opens in its own window, like an app.

Good to know

GB extras such as themes and anti delete stay on your phone, because Chrome shows the normal WhatsApp interface. Our GB WhatsApp Web guide explains every linking option.

Route B: Install the GB WhatsApp APK with ADB and Linux

Google built this route for app developers, and it works without developer mode. You turn on Linux, allow Android debugging, and install the APK from the Linux terminal.

Step 1: Turn on Linux and ADB debugging

  1. Open Settings › About ChromeOS › Developers and turn on the Linux development environment.
  2. In the same Linux section, open Develop Android apps.
  3. Switch on Enable ADB debugging. The Chromebook restarts.
  4. Download the GB WhatsApp APK, then move it into the Linux files folder in the Files app.

Step 2: Install the APK from the terminal

Open the Terminal app, then run these three commands in order. Replace the file name if yours differs.

Linux terminal

# install the Android tools once

sudo apt install adb

# connect to the Android system on this Chromebook

adb connect arc

# install GB WhatsApp

adb install GBWhatsApp.apk

The first time you connect, ChromeOS asks you to allow USB debugging. Click Allow. When the terminal shows “Success”, GB WhatsApp appears in your app launcher.

Keep in mind

Google notes that the ADB toggle may stay missing on some devices until you reset them, and managed Chromebooks cannot use it at all, as the ChromeOS developer docs explain.

Route C: Install GB WhatsApp in Chromebook Developer Mode

Developer mode unlocks the whole system, so you can open APK files like on an Android phone. However, it comes with real costs.

Read this first

Switching on developer mode wipes every file stored on the Chromebook. It also turns off OS verification, so the Chromebook warns you at every start and loses part of its built in protection.

  1. Back up your Downloads folder and anything else stored locally.
  2. Turn off the Chromebook. Hold Esc and Refresh, then press Power.
  3. On the recovery screen, press Ctrl + D and confirm. The Chromebook wipes itself and restarts in developer mode.
  4. Sign in again, open Settings, and go to Apps › Google Play Store › Manage Android preferences.
  5. In the Android settings, open Security and allow Unknown sources.
  6. Install an Android file manager from Google Play, open the GB WhatsApp APK with it, and tap Install.

Menu names differ a little between ChromeOS versions. If you cannot find Unknown sources, use Route B instead.

Looking ahead

ChromeOS Flex and the Future of Android on Chromebooks

ChromeOS Flex

ChromeOS Flex turns an old Windows PC or Mac into a Chromebook like system. However, it does not run Android apps, so GB WhatsApp cannot install there. Use Route A on Flex.

Aluminium OS

Google is building Aluminium OS, which brings Android and ChromeOS together on laptops. Court documents point to limited testing in late 2026 and a wider release later, according to PCWorld. Google also says it will keep supporting current Chromebooks for years, so the routes on this page stay valid for now.

Our Verdict

For most Chromebook owners, Route A wins. Linking WhatsApp Web takes two minutes, changes nothing on the Chromebook, and keeps GB WhatsApp on your phone.

If you need GB features on the Chromebook itself, choose Route B with a spare number. Leave developer mode to people who accept the security trade off.
